3D and video representations for EU design filings

Since 1 July 2026 an EU design can be represented with a 3D file (STL or OBJ) or an MP4 video. The technical requirements are strict. From your existing CAD or STL file I prepare the representations and check every file against the limits.

What I do not do. no legal advice, and I do not decide what to protect; no novelty searches, no legal opinions; I do not file anything with the EUIPO and do not represent anyone: you or your representative file.

1Why now

Why now

  • 1.1Since 1 July 2026 the modernised EU design legal framework is fully applicable. EUIPO news ↗
  • 1.2On 28 July 2026 the EUIPO published the first EU designs represented using video and 3D. EUIPO news, 28 July 2026 ↗
  • 1.3The files have precise limits: JPEG at most 2 MB and 10 files, STL/OBJ/MP4 at most 20 MB, file names at most 25 characters, progressive JPEGs are not accepted. EUIPO Decision EX-26-03 (PDF) ↗

2How it works

  1. 01

    CAD / STL

    your existing production file

  2. 02

    mesh cleanup

    centred, grounded, watertight

  3. 03

    render

    views, STL, MP4

  4. 04

    check sheet

    every file, every limit

Fig. 3: EUIPO 3D and video design representation
  1. 2.1

    Send the file

You send the CAD or STL file of the design, and tell me if colour or material is part of the design.

  2. 2.2

    Representations

Views at the same scale and lighting on a neutral background, a cleaned STL, and a 360 degree rotating video without sound.

  3. 2.3

    Check and hand over

Every measurable requirement of every file, with value and limit. The EUIPO accepts only one representation type per design, so the three folders are alternatives and you choose.

3Scope

What I do

  • static views: up to 10 JPEGs, same scale and lighting, clean background, no text or other objects, 1600 x 1600 px, 300 DPI, non-progressive
  • dynamic: 1 cleaned STL (centred, grounded, watertight mesh), under 20 MB
  • animated: 1 rotating MP4, H.264, 24-30 fps, no audio, under 20 MB
  • draft description in English and Hungarian, under 100 words, visible features only
  • check sheet: every file, every requirement, with SHA-256 checksums
  • one revision round (choice of views, background, lighting, rotation angle)
  • white-label files without my logo for IP firms

What I do not do

  • no legal advice, and I do not decide what to protect
  • no novelty searches, no legal opinions
  • I do not file anything with the EUIPO and do not represent anyone: you or your representative file
  • the files have not yet been tried in the EUIPO filing interface; compliance is based on the text of EX-26-03 Article 8 and on measurements
  • an STL carries shape only, not colour or material; if colour is part of the design, static or video representation is the right choice

6FAQ

Do you have existing clients?

Not yet. This is a new service; the pipeline has run on our own products so far and has not been used on a client filing.

Which representation should I choose?

That is the applicant's or the representative's decision. The EUIPO accepts one representation type per design (static, dynamic or animated), so I deliver all three as alternatives.

What happens to the files I send?

Rendering runs locally, calls no external service and uploads nothing. Files are treated as confidential and deleted after the job on request.
